For a traveller like me, arriving in Jaipur usually means planning ahead of time to see the many famous landmarks that make up this unique Indian city. Amber Fort, Hawa Mahal, City Palace and Jantar Mantar formed my list of must-visits, and there is no denying that I was excited. Indeed, each lived up to its reputation in ways that no number of pictures can really explain.
Yet, surprisingly, some of my most memorable experiences in Jaipur came about through none of these well-known places. Instead, I ended up visiting and enjoying the smaller temples and courtyard buildings the most. Despite not being on the original sightseeing plan, these sites ended up being the most surprising finds on my vacation in Jaipur.
Jaipur’s quieter temples offered a different perspective
As expected, the bigger monuments in Jaipur definitely got their due. On the other hand, the smaller temples offered something different. The serenity surrounding them was somehow soothing without realising it.
These temples were hidden in rows of old residential buildings or even further down narrow winding alleys that had seemed inaccessible to begin with. Finding each temple was an interesting experience. Each time it felt like another layer was peeling away to reveal a more authentic side of the city.
Courtyards are revealed every day in Jaipur
One of the best discoveries in Jaipur turned out to be the city’s traditional courtyards. A large number of havelis and historical buildings possess courtyards, which represent the centre of life in those buildings.
One can notice beautifully decorated walls, door frames, and balconies from these courtyards. They offer small, intimate glimpses into Jaipur’s heritage that felt far more personal than anything I saw in the larger monuments.
Walking without a fixed plan led to the best moments in Jaipur
I have had favourite moments which were simply serendipitous in Jaipur. I would turn off a street because it caught my attention, follow the noise of some sort of activity, and before I knew it, I was in a whole new environment.
Every time I turned, something was waiting for me. There would be a small shrine full of flowers, an old building that, even though it was falling apart, was full of grace or a little corner that was quiet enough that time seemed to slow down. These were things you never read about in travel guides, yet were so much more memorable than most of what was advertised.
With no set itinerary in mind, I started paying attention to more details. To the way the walls feel, the rhythms of the lives that exist and how the late afternoon sunlight shone in certain streets. It became second nature because of the city.
Staying nearby made exploring much easier in Jaipur
Choosing one of the hotels in Jaipur close to the historic centre made a noticeable difference in how I experienced the city. Being nearby meant I could step out early in the morning when the streets were still quiet, or return easily whenever I needed a break.
That flexibility changed everything. I did not feel tied to transport schedules or long travel times between attractions. Instead, I could explore on foot, which is really the best way to experience the old city.
It also meant I could revisit places that caught my attention. If I passed a courtyard or temple that intrigued me, I could return later without any hassle. That freedom made my experience feel more relaxed and personal.
Every corner had its own story
Hotels in Jaipur are depicted through its beautiful palaces and forts, and there lies much more to explore, namely, the daily life that is embodied within the smaller temples and courtyards.
During my stay here, I watched these local customs unfold organically: people praying before their busy days began, vendors recognising repeat customers, and neighbours chatting in narrow alleyways. All of these things were intertwined effortlessly.
Final thoughts
Before I visited Jaipur, I thought the landmarks the city was most famous for were the best parts of the tour there. Although they are fulfilling, those little temples, courtyards and streets created an even greater impact on my mind during this trip. These unexpected encounters make you realise how important spontaneous trips are.
Of course, it is just as important to visit the most famous places in the city. However, if you take some extra time and walk through streets beyond these landmarks, you will likely find an entirely new layer to your experience. It becomes much more comfortable to spend such a trip by staying at hotels in Jaipur located near the ancient part of the city.
